Dave Deason, composer, pianist, woodwind
player, and teacher was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He received his B.M. and M.M. degrees in 1967 and 1968 from Florida State University. He received the Doctorate degree from the Ohio State University in
1992 Although Dave lives in Oregon, he considers himself to be a true Southerner, since he grew up in South Carolina.
Classically trained, beginning with his Mother, Dave has had a lifelong love for both classical music and Jazz. He began playing Jazz professionally while still in high school along the eastern coast of Florida with his band, the Jordu Quintet.
an adult, Dave
spent much of his life teaching music theory, counterpoint,
and Jazz Studies at various colleges and universities. Dave’s compositions are not
limited to the piano, but
includes music for many ensembles, including concert and
music has been heard in New York’s Carnegie Recital Hall,
Town Hall, Federal Hall, the Juilliard School, the Eastman
School, the Manhattan School of Music, Indiana University,
Washington DC’s Corcoran Art Gallery, and in many other
universities and cities across the US and Israel. Performers
of Dave’s music include Wynton Marsalis, Dave Demsey, George
Gabor, Steve Mauk, Jerry
Willard, and the late Meir Rimon ,just to name a few classical
and jazz players.
Dave, his wife Mary,
and their Scottish Terriers have explored many regions of the
state with the
fascination that continues to enthrall many others. An
accomplished clarinet and sax player as well as a pianist,
Dave maintains a private studio in the Hillsboro
area, where he
teaches Classical and Jazz piano, clarinet, theory, MIDI, and composition.
